Running a major transformation program in Africa means reinventing the art of program management.
After 20 years leading major projects on the continent, I am convinced: success does not lie in a rigid Gantt chart or in copying standardized methodologies. It depends on our ability to orchestrate unique human dynamics and unlock the potential of teams on the ground.
To anchor a transformation durably here, three key factors make the difference.
1. Value local ingenuity
When the unexpected happens, African talent shows unique creativity and resourcefulness. The program director's job is not to constrain that ingenuity with overly rigid frameworks, but to build on it and turn it into a performance accelerator.
2. Co-create rather than copy
Transformation cannot be decreed from the top. Leadership in Africa requires strong proximity and constant cultural alignment. The projects that succeed are those where solutions are co-designed with local teams who know the realities of their market inside out.
3. Strategic resilience
Managing programs on the continent demands a high level of agility. Uncertainty is not endured; it is built in from the start as an operational variable. This mental flexibility is what turns complex challenges into growth opportunities.
The true measure of a program's success is not only the cost-time-quality triangle; it is team empowerment and the creation of lasting value for the ecosystem.
